| Hello!!
I just finished reading the article about the CKD diet. It sounds very interesting, but I have a few questions. During the week, are you only allowed to eat protein/fat...no veggies? Do you think a diet like that would be a good choice for a woman who wants to cut 15-25 lbs of fat? Or do you think it would be a better choice to cycle carbs...or just plain eat 5-6 small balanced meals...with the last three being only protein/veggies?
Thanks for your input! Sorry for the round-about questions! |

| Wow, I can definately understand having questions about that diet!
I was curious and just looked it up myself and it does seem very complicated.
I can't give any input on that but I can say from experience that 5-6 balanced meals worked/works great for me! I usually begin cutting down on the carbs after meal 4 and meal 6 for me is typically just a protein shake.
Health-wise and for the long-term, I do believe that 'balanced' meals are a wise choice. Although these high-fat diets probably have their place as 'quick-fixes'? I knew a female bodybuilder that used this sort of diet before competitions, with a lot of success.
So, I do hope and look forward to watching the topic, if anyone can give some personal experience on it! _________________ The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. - William James

| Oh, you can eat veggies, lots of them, but not much else in the way of carbs.
The basic keto part of the diet is eggs, fish, meat, lots and lots of leafy green veg, a little cheese, nuts, and fats to make up your macros. You can also have a whey and dextrose shake after lifting (which doesn't count in your daily carb count, but does count in your calories).
I've been on this sort of diet for over six years now, and I'm in excellent general health, so it's not just a quick fix. One of the interesting things I find on it is that almost everything I eat now comes from my local organic farmer's market. Back when I was eating a "balanced" diet, most of my food was from the supermarket and had a long list of ingredients.
It's an excellent diet for women. More and more research is coming out to show that women need more fat in their diet for good reproductive health and bone density. The only real disadvantage is that women tend to snack more and eat socially, and you can't eat muffins on it. |

| That's awesome!
A great job explaining it too. I at least have a much better idea of what it's about now. My wife has been searching for a diet that she can 'stick with' and has many things that need to be considered (ulcerative colitis) maybe this is it though? Your enthusiasm has at least made it something I'll pass on.
Thanks! Mark _________________ The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. - William James

| Thank you everyone for all of your help. I think I need to do a little bit more research, and begin something like it! I think it would be a great idea to get rid of my carb cravings...and once I get down to a reasonable weight, slowly introduce complex carbs back into my diet (oats, ezekiel bread, sweet potatoes)...does that sound like a good idea?
If any of you have had good experiences with this type of eating plan, let me know!
Thanks again!!
P.S. I do love muffins...but then my Mom said...when you think muffin, think muffin top! haha. Has anyone seen that Lifesavers commercial, about the muffin top? I think it is really funny. |

| | I do agree that carb cycling can be great. Have you been steadily losing and have hit a plateau, or are you just starting out? Where you are at can make a difference as to whether or not a diet like this is right for you. |

| could not agree more with what has been said concerning carb cycling the key is the mount of carbs you need on the Low/Med and High days this is down to body type and metabolism.
With this sort of diet you have to include a cheat meal or meals at one point in the week some do not agree but because of low leptin levels and slower metabolism a cheat meal is ideal to stoke the fire yes high clean carb days can address this as well but in my experience not as good as a cheat meal.
I have used Carb cycling for my self over the last 5yrs in this time using this method i have won.. 2 x regional overall titles top 6 at the British finals and qualified for the Universe 2 x Local shows
I have used this method to help alot of women achieve their goals from my sister dropping from a size 22 to a 12 in 12months to prepping my girl venetia at this years UKBFF finals where she won both her class and the overall title...
so as you can see it is not just for bodybuilders...... |

| Do a search on the CKD diet (Cyclic Ketogenic Diet). I use this near the end of my precontest preparation to get the last bit of fat off. Works wonders. You basically keep your carbs below 30 grams during the week and have carbup days on the weekend. Carbs during the week should come from something like vegetables.
The idea behind keeping the carbs low is to get your body in a state of ketosis. While in ketosis, your body is a fat burning machine. You can get ketone strips at the drug store to verify if you are in ketosis. You urinate on them and if they change colors, they have detected ketones which means your body is solely using fat for energy.
Good diet for quick fat loss but as someone already mentioned, carb cycling is the best way to shed fat. It will also get you in the routine of eating properly. |
